The History of Lemonade – From Antiquity to the Modern Day

Though today we associate lemonade with a refreshing summer drink, its history spans thousands of years and is filled with fascinating facts and surprising twists.

The first recorded reference to a lemon-based beverage dates back to ancient Egypt around 1500 BCE. Egyptians made a mixture of lemon juice and cane sugar known as qatarmizat. This drink wasn’t just refreshing—it was also believed to have medicinal properties, particularly for aiding digestion.

Homemade lemonade became a symbol of summer and childhood enterprise—think of the iconic front-yard lemonade stand, now a cultural classic.

Today, lemonade is experiencing a renaissance. From traditional recipes to artisan herbal blends and sugar-free alternatives, this timeless drink continues to evolve.
