Start a Home Herb Garden – What and How to Grow on Your Windowsill

Growing herbs at home is one of the easiest ways to bring a touch of greenery and freshness into your space. Herbs on your windowsill not only look beautiful, but they also enrich everyday cooking and give you aromatic ingredients at your fingertips all year round. The best part is that you don’t need a garden or much experience to get started.
Which herbs are best for beginners?
If you’re just starting out, choose herbs that are easy to grow. Basil, mint, chives, parsley, oregano, and thyme all grow very well indoors. Basil and mint grow quickly and respond clearly to watering, making it easy to learn their needs. Chives and parsley are hardy and perfect for regular harvesting.
Seeds or ready seedlings?
You have two options. Seeds are cheaper and give you the satisfaction of watching the entire growth process, but they require more patience. Ready seedlings are more convenient – you can use them right away, though it’s worth repotting them into a larger pot so they have room to keep growing.
Location and pots
Herbs love light, so it’s best to place them on a bright windowsill – preferably facing south or east. Pots should have drainage holes to prevent the roots from rotting. It’s also a good idea to add a drainage layer at the bottom, such as expanded clay. The soil should be light and well-draining – soil designed specifically for herbs works best.
Watering and care
The most common mistake is overwatering. Herbs prefer slightly moist soil rather than very wet soil. Water them regularly but moderately, ideally when the top layer of soil has slightly dried out. Trimming the leaves helps the plants grow fuller – the more often you use your herbs, the better they grow.
A green windowsill every day
Growing herbs at home combines practicality with pleasure. Fresh leaves added to dishes, the aroma spreading through the kitchen, and contact with plants can be relaxing and motivating for healthier cooking. It’s a small step that brings a lot of joy.
