How To Store Strawberries, Blueberries And Raspberries Without Mould

The season for fresh berries is short, which makes knowing how to store them properly all the more important. Strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries are among the most mould-prone fruits available - just a few hours in the wrong conditions can spoil an entire batch. With the right storage techniques, however, you can extend their freshness by several days and reduce unnecessary waste.

Why Do Berries Mould So Quickly?

The primary culprit behind rapid moulding is surface moisture combined with natural damage to the fruit's skin, both of which create ideal conditions for fungal growth. Raspberries and strawberries have a delicate structure that bruises easily, releasing juice that accelerates spoilage. Blueberries are somewhat more resilient, but they still require careful handling and appropriate storage conditions to stay fresh for any meaningful length of time.

Refrigerator Storage Best Practices

The golden rule is simple: do not wash berries before refrigerating them. Moisture is the enemy. Store them in shallow containers lined with paper towels, which absorb excess humidity and keep the fruit dry. The ideal refrigerator temperature is between 1 and 4°C. Inspect berries daily and remove any that show signs of mould immediately, as a single spoiled berry can quickly contaminate its neighbours. Rinse only just before eating.

The Vinegar Rinse Trick

One of the most effective and food-safe methods for extending berry freshness is a brief soak in a diluted vinegar solution - mix one part white vinegar with three parts water. The acetic acid kills mould spores and bacteria present on the surface of the fruit. After soaking, rinse thoroughly with plain water and dry the berries completely before placing them in a container in the fridge. This technique works particularly well for strawberries and blueberries.

Freezing As A Long-Term Solution

If you do not plan to consume your berries within two to three days, freezing is the most practical option. Wash and dry the fruit thoroughly, then spread it in a single layer on a baking tray and freeze until solid. Transfer the frozen berries to airtight bags or containers to prevent clumping. This method preserves most of their nutritional value and flavour. Properly frozen berries can be stored for up to twelve months without significant quality loss.
