How to Start Your Own Collection of Herbs and Spices at Home

Herbs and spices aren’t just about flavor and fragrance—they’re also a gateway to better health, smart savings, and bringing a bit of nature into your kitchen. Starting your own collection doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. All it takes is a little effort and the right mindset!  

1. Choose the Right Spot

Start by selecting a space—it could be a kitchen windowsill, a balcony, or even a bit of countertop. What matters most is that your plants get at least 4–6 hours of natural light per day. For dried spices, invest in a stylish spice rack or small labeled jars for easy access.  

2. Fresh, Dried, or Both?

If you enjoy growing things, go for fresh herbs: basil, mint, oregano, thyme, parsley, or rosemary. You can buy starter plants from garden centers—or even from the grocery store—and transplant them into your own pots. As for dried spices like turmeric, cinnamon, cumin, or paprika, it’s best to buy them in bulk and store them in airtight containers.  

3. Labels and Organization

Good organization is key. Use labels to help you quickly identify each herb or spice. You can even group them by cuisine: Italian, Asian, Mediterranean, and so on.  

4. Care and Maintenance

Water your fresh herbs regularly, but avoid overwatering. Trim them every few weeks to encourage healthy growth. Keep dried spices away from moisture and sunlight—in a closed cupboard or drawer is best.  

5. Experiment and Enjoy the Flavor!
