Houseplants In Spring – How To Refresh Them After Winter?

As spring arrives, houseplants begin to wake from the long, dim winter months, ready to enter a new season of vigorous growth. This is the perfect time to give them some dedicated attention and set them up for success throughout the year. A few simple care routines are all it takes to restore their vitality and beauty. Think of spring maintenance as a worthwhile investment that rewards you with thriving, lush plants all season long.
Inspection And Cleaning
Start by carefully examining each plant for signs of winter stress. Remove any dry, yellowing, or damaged leaves, along with spent flower stems. Over winter, dust accumulates on leaf surfaces and hinders photosynthesis, so wipe leaves gently with a damp cloth or give smaller plants a soft shower in the bathtub. This simple cleaning routine restores a fresh appearance and helps plants absorb light more efficiently as the days grow longer and brighter.
Fertilising And Watering
With increasing daylight, plants require more nutrients to support new growth. Resume fertilising from mid-March onwards, beginning with a reduced dose of a balanced, multi-nutrient fertiliser. Gradually increase watering frequency in line with how quickly the compost dries out. Be cautious not to overwater, however — roots weakened by winter dormancy are particularly susceptible to rot when exposed to excess moisture in the soil.
Repotting And Fresh Compost
Spring is the ideal season to repot plants that have outgrown their containers over the past year. Key signs that a plant needs a new pot include roots emerging from drainage holes or compost that has become dense and water-repellent. Choose a new pot only 2–3 cm larger in diameter than the current one. Fresh, nutrient-rich compost will supply the plant with essential minerals to fuel healthy spring and summer growth.
More Light And Fresh Air
After months of winter darkness, houseplants are hungry for sunlight. Move pots closer to south- or west-facing windows and begin airing rooms regularly, taking care to shield plants from cold draughts. Introduce stronger light gradually to prevent leaf scorch, particularly for shade-tolerant species. Plants placed in optimal light conditions will push out new shoots more quickly, rewarding your seasonal care efforts with dense, lush, healthy foliage.
